One of America's most well-known fourteeners is Pi One of America's most well-known fourteeners is Pike's Peak. Coming in at 14,115 feet, Pike's Peak has a long history intertwined in geological formations and human experience. The mountain was formed around 50 million years ago, and the first humans to visit Pike's Peak and the surrounding mountains were Ute Indians, followed by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. The Lousiana Purchase included the mountain chain and the surrounding areas, and in 1806, the mountain was sighted by explorer Lt. Zebulon Pike. Unfortunately, a blizzard kept Pike from reaching the summit, but the peak forever holds his name. Did you know that Katharine Lee Bates wrote the poem which inspired the song, "America the Beautiful" atop Pike's Peak? #colorado #pikespeak
